Today, you will go on a journey to the southern part of the island. The story of this adventure dates to 1845 when a challenging path was first opened for intrepid pedestrians. Fast forward to 1896, and thermal baths were established here. Before a proper road for vehicles was built, the only way to reach Cilaos was on a "sedan chair." Quite a feat, considering Cilaos is perched at an elevation of 1200 metres (about the height of the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world)!
The ascent along the "400 bends road" is not just a road; it's a scenic masterpiece. Along the way, you'll encounter exceptional vantage points that offer breathtaking views of numerous charming hamlets. As you approach the village, surrounded by towering peaks, you'll be transported to what feels like a village from another era. Old houses are nestled amidst flower-filled courtyards and gardens, reminiscent of a vibrant artist's palette in the summertime. You'll find jacarandas casting purple hues, dahlias, azaleas, roses, hydrangeas, and mimosas, all adding to the picturesque charm.
Cilaos isn't just about its natural beauty; it's also famous for its hydropathy establishment, exquisite embroidery, unique wine production (the only one in Reunion), and its renowned lentils. Numerous walking trails beckon you to explore this paradise, with "La Roche Merveilleuse" offering the best viewpoint of the cirque, accessible via a forest path, car, or bus. From this vantage point, you'll have an unparalleled panoramic view of the entire cirque, the village, winding paths, and lush forests.
Don't forget to visit the thermal baths, including the historic remnants from the 19th century, accessible via a picturesque road, as well as the modern spa and health facilities. You'll have the option to enjoy lunch on your own during the day.
Later in the afternoon, we'll visit the "Embroidery House" and delve into the intricate world of "les Jours de Cilaos" (highly recommended). As the sun begins to set, you will make a stop at "the whirlpool" in L’Etang-Salé, before returning to your hotel around 5.30pm. You'll spend the night at the hotel in Cilaos Cirque, where dinner will be provided.
